NAVI MUMBAI: A City
and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) team that had gone to
Usarli village in New Panvel to raze down an illegal building, had to
retreat after locals protested against the drive. The building is in the
Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area ( NAINA). Authorities said
such illegal structures will cause obstacles while planning the
infrastructure in the vicinity of the proposed airport.
The demolition drive was being undertaken by the Cidco controller of unauthorized construction (CUC) team. After the protest, the new CUC chief, Sunil Kendrekar, instructed the officials to stop the demolition drive.
A source said that the protestors wanted to resolve the dispute after talks with higher authorities in Cidco.
Uttam Yadav, assistant CUC, said, "Two illegal structures were being built . Our team started demolishing one of the illegal buildings. It was partially pulled down when we received the order from Kendrekar to stop the drive. So we had to retreat without completely razing the structure."
As many as 20 workers were hired to raze the structure. The Khandeshwar police had provided 40 cops for security
