Cidco allots Rs 6 crore to develop Parsik Hill nature park

NAVI MUMBAI: The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) board has approved a provision of Rs 6 crore to develop a nature park to preserve the ecology and biodiversity of Parsik Hill and surrounding areas. No construction will be allowed in the 2,000 hectare (ha) earmarked for the nature park.

The main objective of the nature park is to protect the biodiversity in the area. Cidco has constituted a committee consisting of forest officials, Cidco environment officer and former Cidco planner D P Sawant to develop the nature park under the guidance of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). BNHS had conducted a survey about the biodiversity and ecology in the range and valley of Parsik Hill.

During the survey, different kinds of species have been found in six locations — Artist Village (210 ha) Valley park (50 ha) Kharghar Hill (200 ha) Parsik Hills (15 ha) Kharghar Plateau (1,420 ha) and the area behind Bharati Vidyapeeth (25 ha) in Navi Mumbai area. Notable among them are 292 plant species, 295 insect species, 15 other invertebrate species, 12 fish species, 9 amphibian species, 28 reptiles, 179 bird species and 12 mammal species.

"It is our policy that the ecological balance and biodiversity of the region must be protected, even in the course of fast-paced urbanization in Thane and Raigad districts," said a senior Cidco official. He added that the nature park will be a priceless resource for Botany and Zoology

Chief PRO Dr Mohan Ninave said, "A major portion is under the forest department. Parsik Hill is under the jurisdiction of Thane forest range, Kharghar Hill falls under the jurisdiction of Raigad forest range."
